What counts as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any problem that needs a dentist soon to stop pain, control swelling or save a tooth — a severe toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown, or swelling in the gum or face.
Call us at (617) 655-8535 as soon as it happens. On Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday we keep time for same-day emergency visits, and we'll tell you when to come in.
If it happens on a Monday, Wednesday or Sunday, leave a message or book online and we'll get back to you when the office opens. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

What happens at an emergency visit.
- 01
Call or text us
Tell us what happened. On our open days we find you a same-day time.
- 02
Pain relief first
If you're in pain, we numb the area as soon as possible.
- 03
Find the cause
Digital X-rays and, when needed, a 3D CBCT scan show exactly what's going on.
- 04
Fix it or plan it
We treat what we can that day — often a same-day crown or root canal treatment — and explain the next steps and cost before we start.
Our office hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8 am – 5 pm. Same-day availability depends on the day's schedule, so please call before you come in.
What to do right now.
Simple steps that help until we see you. They don't replace a visit.
Act within the hour.
Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently and try to place it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk and call us right away.
Save the pieces.
Rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any fragments, and use a cold compress on your cheek if there's swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.
Don't wait it out.
Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss around the tooth and avoid very hot or cold food. Pain that keeps you up at night needs to be seen.
Keep the crown.
Bring it with you. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can hold it in place until your visit — never use household glue.
Take it seriously.
Use a cold compress and call us. If swelling spreads, or makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the ER or call 911.
Leave it alone.
Try not to move it with your tongue or chew on it, and call us to be seen as soon as possible.
Emergency care that fixes the problem.
Often fixed in one visit
When a broken tooth can be restored, our in-office CEREC system can often make and place a ceramic crown the same day.

Cost before treatment
We explain your options and your out-of-pocket cost before we start, so you can decide with no pressure.
What an emergency visit costs.
The cost depends on what we find and what treatment you need. We check your insurance and explain your options and cost before any treatment — you decide what happens next.
- 01We check your insurance benefits and explain your out-of-pocket cost before treatment begins.
- 02We work with most major PPO plans and file the claims for you.
- 03Monthly payment options are available through Cherry, Proceed, HFD and CareCredit, subject to approval.
Care from people who explain, not rush.
What patients ask us.
Can I be seen the same day?
On Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday we keep time for same-day emergency visits. Call (617) 655-8535 and we'll tell you when to come in.
Do you take walk-ins?
Please call before you come. That way we can make sure a dentist is ready for you and you don't have to wait.
What if it happens on a day you're closed?
Leave a message or book online and we'll get back to you when the office opens. If you have swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a high fever or a serious injury, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
Can you fix a broken tooth in one visit?
Often, yes. If the tooth can be restored, we can usually repair it the same day — with a filling or a same-day CEREC crown. Your dentist will tell you what's possible after the exam.
Do you take my insurance?
We work with most major PPO plans and will check your benefits before treatment. We do not accept MassHealth.
What should I do with a knocked-out tooth?
Hold it by the crown, rinse it gently and try to put it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk and call us immediately — the sooner you're seen, the better the chance of saving it.
