Why Airflow is safe for your teeth

Softer than enamelThe erythritol powder is about 14 microns wide, far smaller and softer than tooth enamel, so it can't scratch or wear it down the way older polishing pastes could.
Clinically studiedGuided Biofilm Therapy is backed by published dental research and is FDA-cleared for use on natural teeth, restorations and implants.
Dentist-supervisedYour hygienist controls spray pressure, angle and distance throughout, and switches to a gentler setting near gum tissue and exposed root surfaces.
Guided Biofilm Therapy Protocol

Four steps, one visit.

Every Airflow teeth cleaning at our Boston Financial District dental office follows the same Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol, the Swiss method used by EMS-certified practices worldwide.

1

We make the plaque visible

A colour-safe disclosing dye stains the biofilm on your teeth so you can see exactly what's there, and so nothing gets missed.

2

Airflow removes it

The handpiece sprays warm water, air and an ultra-fine erythritol powder (particles about 14 microns wide, far softer and smaller than enamel) in a controlled jet that lifts plaque, biofilm and surface stain off teeth, the gumline and between teeth. Nothing is scraped or ground away, the powder does the work a metal scaler used to. No blade, no grinding sound, no pressure on the tooth surface.

3

Hard deposits, if any

Only where tartar has actually hardened do we use a fine piezo scaler tip, a fraction of the instrument time of a traditional cleaning.

Tap to scale
4

Check, fluoride, done

A final pass with the dye confirms nothing's left, fluoride varnish is applied, and your next cleaning goes on the calendar.

Unnecessary polishing

We replaced traditional rubber-cup polishing with Swiss AIRFLOW® technology. AIRFLOW® removes biofilm and surface stains with air, warm water and fine powder. If hardened tartar is present, ultrasonic scaling is used only where clinically needed.

Common questions

Anything else? Call the front desk at (617) 655-8535.

Does Airflow teeth cleaning hurt?

Most patients describe it as a warm spray. The powder is fine and low-abrasive, and there's no scraping along the gumline, where traditional cleanings usually feel sharp.

Is it safe for implants, crowns and veneers?

Yes, it's one of the main reasons we use it. Airflow cleans around restorations, implants and orthodontic attachments without the abrasion of paste polishing.

What exactly happens to my teeth, and why is it safe?

Nothing is scraped, cut or ground. A spray of warm water, air and fine erythritol powder (particles about 14 microns wide, softer than enamel) dislodges plaque and stain from the tooth surface, gumline and between teeth, the same way rinsing removes dust from a car without buffing the paint. It's FDA-cleared, backed by clinical research, and your hygienist adjusts pressure and distance throughout, especially near gum tissue and root surfaces.

Will Airflow whiten my teeth?

It removes surface stain from coffee, tea, wine and smoking, so teeth look brighter, but it doesn't change the natural shade of enamel. That's whitening, which we quote separately.

Do you still need metal instruments?

Only for tartar that has already hardened, and only where it actually is. Everything soft comes off with Airflow first, so instrument time drops sharply.

Does dental insurance cover Airflow cleaning?

Most PPO plans cover a routine cleaning, and we apply that toward the visit. Send your card ahead and we'll confirm your out-of-pocket cost in writing before you come in.
